SPREADING JOY: CANUCKS PLACE 2024 WINTER FAMILY FESTIVAL

The holiday season is a time for magic, warmth, and giving—and this year, The Kristian Domingo Foundation was honored to be part of something truly special: the 2024 Winter Family Festival at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.

Every year, Canuck Place hosts this incredible celebration, ensuring that children and their siblings in the program experience the joy of the season. One of the most heartwarming moments of the festival is when each child receives a personalized gift from Santa—donations made possible by generous individuals, families, and organizations.

When we heard about this initiative, we knew we had to be involved. The idea of bringing holiday cheer to these children and their families resonated deeply with the Kristian Domingo Foundation’s mission. So, with just two weeks on the clock, we sprang into action.

Shopping with Purpose

Our goal? To gather over 60 gifts, each with a minimum spend of $50 per child, ensuring that every gift was meaningful. But we didn’t just stop at purchasing items—we looked at each child’s wish list and shopped till we dropped, determined to find exactly what they had hoped for. Some gifts were easy to find, while others had us on a full-fledged scavenger hunt, tracking down sold-out items and searching high and low to make sure no wish went unfulfilled. And guess what? We did it! Every single gift on our list made it to Canuck Place in time.

The Power of a Gift

A toy. A game. A doll. A book. These might seem like simple things, but to a child facing medical challenges, they represent something so much bigger—joy, excitement, and a moment of pure happiness. When the kids received their gifts at the Winter Family Festival, their faces lit up with pure delight. Seeing their excitement reminded us why we do what we do.

More than just a Gift

This experience wasn’t just about the gifts—it was about the spirit of giving, the power of community, and the importance of spreading love. At KDF, we believe that small acts of kindness can create lasting memories, and this holiday season, we were reminded just how true that is.

To everyone who helped make this possible, from our donors to our volunteers, we thank you. Your generosity ensured that every child at Canuck Place felt seen, valued, and celebrated. And that’s the true meaning of the season.

As we wrap up this incredible initiative, we’re already looking forward to next year. Because nothing compares to the joy of giving—and we can’t wait to do it all over again.

Happy Holidays from all of us at KDF!

HONOURING LOVE & LEGACY: THE 2024 GIFT OF TIME GALA

On November 2, 2024, we had the immense honour of attending the Gift of Time Gala, an evening dedicated to supporting the compassionate care provided by Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. Surrounded by a room filled with hearts committed to making a difference, we were moved by the powerful stories shared throughout the night—stories of love, resilience, and remembrance by Spencer Ho, Lukas Domingo and Marysa Ho.

Stories of Love and Loss

One of the most profound moments of the evening came when our very own Lukas Domingo, along with Spencer and Marysa Ho, took the stage. They bravely shared their sibling story, speaking about their beloved brothers, Kristian Domingo and Mitchel Ho. Their words resonated deeply, capturing the unbreakable bond of siblings and the shared experience of navigating grief. Through their heartfelt reflections, they reminded us all that while loss leaves an undeniable void, love remains everlasting.

Finding Strength in Shared Grief

Hearing Lukas, Spencer, and Marysa speak so candidly about their journeys brought forth both tears and inspiration. Their message was clear—grief is not a solitary experience, but one that we can move through together, supporting and uplifting each other along the way. Their ability to channel their pain into purpose is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the incredible work that Canuck Place continues to do for families facing unimaginable loss.

A Beacon of Hope

The Gift of Time Gala is more than just an event; it’s a gathering of community, a beacon of hope, and a reminder that every moment matters. The evening reaffirmed our commitment to ensuring that children and families receive the care, comfort, and support they deserve.

We are deeply grateful to have been part of this meaningful night and to witness firsthand the impact of shared stories and collective generosity. Thank you to Canuck Place, to every donor, and most importantly, to every family who has allowed their stories to inspire change. Together, we continue to honour the past, embrace the present, and create a future filled with love and remembrance.

A DAY TO REMEMBER: THE 2024 #11 FOREVER HOMECOMING GAME

On September 21, 2024, the Vancouver College community gathered under the bright afternoon sun for the annual #11 Forever Homecoming Football Game, hosted by the Vancouver College Alumni. This event, more than just a game, was a heartfelt tribute to the lasting legacy of Kristian Domingo and his deep love for football, brotherhood, and community.

A Dominant Victory

Facing off against Rutherford, the Vancouver College Fighting Irish put on a stellar performance, securing a commanding 34-13 victory. From the opening kickoff to the final whistle, the team displayed resilience, determination, and teamwork—values that Kristian himself embodied both on and off the field.

Honouring Kristian's Legacy

In a powerful tribute, the Fighting Irish took the field wearing custom black and purple jerseys, a fresh take on their traditional white and purple or gold and purple jerseys. These school colours not only paid homage to their heritage but also honoured Kristian’s legacy in a bold new way. Each player also donned #11 Forever stickers on their helmets, a meaningful nod to Kristian and his enduring impact on the team and school. It was more than just a uniform—it was a statement of unity, a symbol of remembrance, and a testament to the unwavering spirit that Kristian left behind.

More than just a Game

The #11 Forever Homecoming is not just about football; it is a gathering of alumni, students, families, and friends who continue to uphold Kristian’s legacy. It’s a day where past and present come together, where cheers from the stands echo not only for the team’s triumph but also in celebration of a life that continues to inspire.

As we reflect on another unforgettable homecoming, we are reminded that Kristian’s spirit lives on in every play, every chant, and every moment shared by the Vancouver College community. His love for football and his unwavering commitment to his teammates and friends will always be honoured.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support this special event. Kristian, you are forever #11, and your legacy will never fade.

RIDING FOR A CURE: THE 2024 TOUR DE CURE

On August 24, 2024, cyclists, supporters, and volunteers gathered for an inspiring day at the annual Tour de Cure, an event dedicated to raising critical funds for cancer research. Although the Kristian Domingo Foundation team participated in just one day of the ride, instead of the two-day route, the experience was still an unforgettable journey of resilience, unity, and community spirit. Sadly, this marks the final year for the Tour de Cure in BC, making it even more meaningful for everyone involved.

Pedalling with Purpose

Participants in the Tour de Cure committed to raising at least $2,500 to support groundbreaking cancer research. The fundraising efforts directly benefit the BC Cancer Foundation, helping to fund life-saving treatments and programs. Each year, the event raises millions of dollars, making a tangible impact on cancer research. Riders spent months preparing, training, and rallying their networks to meet their fundraising goals. For those who couldn’t cycle, there were also volunteer opportunities to help support the cause.

The Journey

The adventure began early on the morning of August 24th at 5:30 AM at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. Riders fuelled up with breakfast before setting off at 7:25 AM. Participants could choose between a 100 km or 160 km route, both featuring well-placed pit stops every 25 km for rest, hydration, and encouragement. The scenic ride to Chilliwack Heritage Park was challenging, but the perseverance of the riders made it a rewarding experience.

This year’s ride came with an added challenge—pouring rain on Day 1, which made the journey even more demanding. Despite the wet and slippery conditions, riders pushed forward, demonstrating unwavering dedication to the cause.

Upon arrival at Chilliwack, cyclists were treated to hot showers, a delicious dinner, tent accommodations, and live entertainment—a well-deserved reward after the tough day on the road.

The Kristian Domingo Foundation Team

The Kristian Domingo Foundation team proudly participated in the Tour de Cure, riding in memory of Kristian and in honour of all those affected by cancer. Our riders included Kara Fleck, Anne Marie CoppingJill Masters, and our very own CEO, Teresa Domingo. Each rider trained, fundraised, and rode with the same spirit of resilience and perseverance that defined Kristian’s journey.

To distinguish ourselves from the thousands of other riders, the team donned flowers on their helmets, a beautiful and symbolic tribute to Kristian’s enduring spirit. Despite the rain, we rode with pride, carrying forward his legacy of strength, hope, and giving back.

The Tour de Cure is more than just a ride—it’s a movement. It’s a reminder that when we come together, we can make a profound difference in the fight against cancer. To everyone who rode, donated, or volunteered—thank you for being part of this powerful mission.

As we say farewell to this iconic event in BC, we are filled with gratitude for the years of support and camaraderie. The fight against cancer continues, and so does our commitment to making a difference. #TourdeCure #RideForACure #11Forever

Our team, comprising CEO Teresa Domingo, Kara Fleck, Anne Marie Copping, Katy Vela, and Jill Masters, joined over 1,500 cyclists from around the world in this impactful event.

The Journey

The two-day event commenced on August 26, 2023, at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. Despite challenges such as elevated temperatures and air quality advisories due to regional wildfire smoke, participants remained undeterred, showcasing remarkable resilience and dedication.

The Kristian Domingo Foundation Team

Our team rode in memory of Kristian and in honour of all those affected by cancer. To represent the foundation, our riders proudly wore matching blue and orange cycling uniforms, featuring our logo, standing out among the sea of participants. 2020 VANCOUVER SUN RUN

For the Domingo family, the 2020 Vancouver Sun Run will be bittersweet. The Vancouver family is preparing to register—registration for the April 19 race opens Friday—and they are excited to take part in the 10K run as they did in 2019, to honour the memory of Kristian Domingo.

Kristian's Legacy Lives On

In 2016, Kristian—athletic, big-hearted, and family-oriented—rallied his dad, mom, two older brothers, and future sister-in-law, to run in the Sun Run, despite undergoing cancer treatment.

“This is really the story of this young man who did not survive cancer, but he was able to get us all together for something we could all do,” said his mother, Teresa Domingo. “I was really glad he was able to encourage us.”

Running as a Family

Now, Teresa, her husband Emmanuel, sons Lukas (25) and Josh (30), along with Josh’s wife Kizzie and Kristian’s girlfriend Bailey Dagg, are preparing for the 2020 run.

“Last year we ran it as a family, and this year we’re running it again as a family,” said Teresa from her Vancouver home. She hopes sharing her late son’s story will inspire others who may need motivation to take on the 10K.

Kristian's Battle with Cancer

Kristian wasn’t feeling well before his high school graduation in June 2014 but put off seeing a doctor until the day after the ceremony. The news was devastating—he had a rare pediatric cancer. Despite the diagnosis, Kristian continued to live with strength, love, and an unwavering spirit that continues to inspire those who knew him.

For the Domingo family, running in the Sun Run is more than just a race—it’s a way to celebrate Kristian’s life, strength, and the love he brought to everyone around him.

2019 GIFT OF TIME GALA

Canuck Place’s marquee event, Gift of Time, set a new fundraising standard when a reported $1.53 million was raised from the posh party. A caring community of generous supporters, sponsors, and volunteers made the scene for the gala’s 15th staging.

Gala co-chairs Karley Rice, Lee Rennison, Pippa Morgan, and a 20-member committee welcomed 750 well-heeled and well-dressed guests to the charity dinner, presented by Nicola Wealth at the stunning Parq Vancouver ballroom.

Bidding for a Cause

Throughout the glittery evening, revellers placed bids on a unique and exclusive collection of live and silent auction items, contributing nearly $500,000 towards the event’s final tally.

A Father's Powerful Tribute

But as usual, the major gifts came after hearing from Canuck Place family members. Our very own director and Canuck Place father, Emmanuel Domingo, shared a powerful speech about Kristian, who received expert clinical care at Canuck Place, bringing the captivated audience to its feet.

“Canuck Place gave us the gift of time … time to allow us to be a family,” said Domingo.

“After Kristian passed away, we reluctantly left Canuck Place feeling lost, empty, and profoundly sad. But our journey with Canuck Place was far from over. They continued to care for us. They provided support for our grief, and still do. We are so grateful for the abundance of compassion and kindness they have given, not only for us, but for all the children and families they care for.”

Kristian's Battle with Cancer

The 2019 Gift of Time Gala was more than just an evening of glamour—it was a testament to the power of community, generosity, and the unwavering support that Canuck Place provides to children and families facing unimaginable challenges.

Thanks to the kindness of donors, sponsors, and guests, this record-breaking night will continue to make a lasting impact, ensuring that families receive the compassionate care and precious moments they deserve.

Because at Canuck Place, every moment matters. ❤️

A NIGHT OF GIVING: DICE & ICE 2019

On February 22, 2019, the annual Dice & Ice Gala once again brought together the Vancouver Canucks, community leaders, and passionate supporters for an unforgettable evening of generosity and impact. Held in support of Canucks for Kids Fund, this spectacular event combined high-energy casino-style gaming, live entertainment, and inspiring stories—all with the goal of raising crucial funds for children and families in need.

A Night to Remember

This year’s gala was a night to remember, filled with glitz, glamour, and heartfelt moments. Attendees had the chance to interact with their favorite Canucks players, bid on exclusive auction items, and enjoy a dazzling evening while making a real difference in the lives of kids facing incredible challenges. But beyond the bright lights and lively atmosphere, Dice & Ice is about the power of community and the resilience of the families supported by these essential programs.

A Heartfelt Speech

One of the most powerful moments of the night came when Lukas Domingo took the stage to share his family’s story. Lukas spoke about his late brother, Kristian Domingo, and his courageous battle with cancer. With unwavering strength, Lukas recounted the impact that Canuck Place Children’s Hospice had on Kristian and their entire family.

Kristian, who was diagnosed with childhood cancer, found care, comfort, and joy at Canuck Place, a place that became a second home during his journey. Lukas’ words painted a touching picture of the compassion and unwavering support provided by the hospice, where Kristian was able to experience moments of laughter, love, and peace despite the hardships of his illness. His speech resonated deeply with the audience, reminding everyone why events like Dice & Ice matter so much.

Making a Lasting Impaact

Through emotional testimonials like Lukas’, the evening underscored the importance of supporting initiatives like Canucks for Kids Fund. Every dollar raised at Dice & Ice helps fund critical programs such as Canuck Place, BC Children’s Hospital, and the Canucks Autism Network—programs that bring hope to families during their toughest times.

The 2019 Dice & Ice Gala was more than just a night of entertainment; it was a night of impact, unity, and remembering that together, we can create brighter futures for children in need. The legacy of Kristian Domingo lives on, inspiring others to continue the fight and support those who need it most.

BMO MARATHON

On May 7, 2017, we were very grateful to have one of our family members participate in the 2017 BMO Vancouver Marathon. Kizzie Domingo (Josh’s wife) dedicated her first half-marathon run to Kristian Domingo. She described how nervous she was, having never participated in a run of this caliber before.  She also described it as one of the hardest challenges she has ever had to overcome. Yet, despite all that, her inspiration and drive to finish the race and not quit were prominent because of Kristian.

Kristian's Unbreakable Spirit

She recalled how Kristian, even while undergoing treatment, had completed the 10K Sun Run on April 17, 2016. His lungs weren’t at full capacity, but his willpower was unstoppable. “There was nothing that could limit him from doing what he wanted to do,” she said.

A Moment of Strength

At the 16km mark, exhaustion set in, and doubt crept in. But by 18km, she felt an undeniable surge of energy—a moment she knew was Kristian pushing her forward. Kristian believed in family, in lifting others up, in never leaving anyone behind. And in that moment, Kizzie felt him right beside her, carrying her to the finish line.

Honouring his Legacy

Through her run, Kizzie raised $2,818 for Canuck Place, the hospice where Kristian spent his final days. Her story and fundraising efforts were recognized by the BMO Vancouver Marathon Blog and the Canuck Place Family Advisory Council (FAC) newsletter, honoring not just her achievement, but the legacy of an incredible young man who continues to inspire us all.
